Note from Ryan
If you’ve ever had a magician awe you, more than likely you have been awed by something that was actually very simple. There is a strict code among magicians which says they will not explain their magic tricks. To do so would be to open up the curtain and pop the bubble of illusion.
As a teenager, I decided that I wanted to be a magician, and the first thing I was taught was the art of misdirection.
Misdirection is one of the key tools of any good magician. They get you to look at the wrong thing, so they can work on the WOW! stuff. If a magician can get you to look intently at his right hand, you won’t notice what the magician is doing with his left hand.
To that end, the magician will perch a bird on his right hand or wave a scarf in the air or tap her magic wand. While you are focused on the magician’s right hand, this leaves his left hand free unobserved to put the quarter up his sleeve, maneuver the cups or flip a hidden lever. This is true of many things in our lives. They seem harder than they are because we don’t understand them or aren’t paying attention to the correct hand.
On some level my mind knows that this is true of our lives as well. During my twenty years in ministry, I have sat and cried with many people whose lives had suddenly been blown apart. They were walking through life paying attention to their job or their family, when suddenly the bitter winds of adversity, disease, divorce or death blow in unseen. Often one’s life is turned upside down overnight. Rhythms are disrupted, and nothing seems real or familiar. Happiness and joy seem like fading shadows, motivation wanes and you pull inward as everything spirals out of control.
It seems as if the beautiful tapestry of your life is threatened by an unseen hand. But in those moments we must be careful to watch for God’s hand. To that end David tells us in Psalm 52 as he is on the run from King Saul: “But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God, I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.” Even when we our very lives are threatened, focus on the right hand: God’s hand.
